In a remarkable step towards preserving and promoting Ghana’s linguistic heritage, consultants working on behalf of Hon. Mavis K. Bissue, Member of Parliament for Ahanta West, have presented the completed orthography of the Ahanta language to the leadership of the Bureau of Ghanaian Languages (BGL).

This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to document, standardize, and institutionalize the Ahanta language as a subject of study in schools. Hon. Bissue proudly announced that the Bureau of Ghanaian Languages has officially validated the Ahanta orthography, paving the way for a unified and teachable version of the language.

The newly validated orthography harmonizes all Ahanta dialects from Sekondi, Apowa, to Akwidaa into a single standardized form. This unity will facilitate the development of textbooks, classroom materials, and examination frameworks, ensuring that Ahanta becomes an examinable subject under the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in the near future.

Expressing her heartfelt appreciation, Hon. Bissue thanked Lawyer Ebenezer Ahiator, Director of the BGL, and his dedicated team for their enthusiasm and commitment to the project. She also acknowledged the tireless work of the Ahanta Language Renaissance Project Committee, whose members continue to push forward the dream of seeing the Ahanta language flourish in schools and communities.

This validation brings us closer to realizing a dream shared by all citizens of Ahanta to see our language taught, studied, and protected for generations to come, Hon. Bissue remarked.

The Ahanta Language Renaissance Project stands as a symbol of cultural pride and identity, reinforcing the belief that a people’s strength lies in the preservation of their language and heritage.
