Mercy Johnson Slams Ghana’s Blazing TV for Alleged Unauthorized Airing of Her Movie
#JusticeForCreatives – Nollywood Star Mercy Johnson Calls Out Ghana’s Blazing TV Over Copyright Violation
Popular Nollywood actress and filmmaker Mercy Johnson-Okojie has raised concerns over intellectual property violations after accusing Ghanaian television station Blazing TV of airing her movie without consent.
In a post shared on her official social media handles, the award-winning actress expressed her disappointment and frustration over what she described as blatant disregard for her creative rights. Mercy Johnson stated that her movie was broadcast on the Ghana-based TV station without any form of authorisation, licensing agreement, or royalty payment.
"It’s very disheartening to see my hard work and intellectual property being used without permission. Blazing TV Ghana, you aired my film without my consent, and that is outright piracy," she wrote.
The actress, known for her roles in blockbuster Nollywood productions such as Dumebi the Dirty Girl, Baby Oku in America, and 30 Days in Atlanta, emphasised that the exploitation of filmmakers' works not only discourages creativity but also harms the entertainment industry as a whole.
Mercy Johnson’s outcry has sparked massive reactions online, with fans and fellow creatives rallying behind her using the hashtag #JusticeForCreatives. Many called for stricter enforcement of copyright laws across Africa and better collaboration between broadcasters and content owners.
The actress has not disclosed whether legal action will follow, but her callout highlights a recurring issue many filmmakers face: unauthorised use of their content across various platforms, especially in cross-border territories where enforcement is often weak.
This incident also brings attention to the need for regional cooperation on intellectual property rights within the African entertainment industry, as more creators look to monetise their works across multiple markets.
As of now, Blazing TV is yet to issue an official response to the allegations.
